GENERAL INFORMATION
From 1 January 2025, hauliers in France will be obliged to provide their customers with information relating to greenhouse gas emissions resulting from their services.
The initiative is not new on French territory, but is based on legislation that has existed since 2013, limited to carbon dioxide, subsequently extended to all greenhouse gases from 1 June 2017, although its entry into force did not lead to sanctions for failure to comply with the requirement.
The new regulation will apply to all modes of transport and all transport operations that originate or end on French territory.
The emissions calculation method, based on the European regulation NF EN 16258 (currently under revision), is detailed in articles D1431-6 to D1431-19 of the French transport code and will soon be available on the French Agency for Environment and Energy Management (Ademe). In this regard, the IRU also recommends using the EVE platform.
With reference to non-compliance with the legislation, the French transport code specifies "any violation could result in an administrative fine of up to 3000 euros."
