GENERAL INFORMATION
Hundreds of ships give up on crossing Suez. And many goods return to the aircraft. Malpensa is full of tons embarked.
Milan Malpensa, the first Italian hub and the eighth at European level for freight traffic, which after the 6.8% decline in 2023, is in the recovery phase, recording an increase in traffic of 13.6% in the first quarter, which continues to rise gradually according to the latest data from April, standing at +14% (first quarter 2024 data). However, there is still a portion of traffic that Italy loses to the benefit of other European airports and that our country must aim to recover.
In the first quarter of 2024, freight traffic showed significant growth, +16.8%, compared to the same period of the previous year. Rome Fiumicino airport even recorded a +68% in the first three months, which rises to +71% if we also consider the April data.
According to an IATA report on trends in the national air cargo sector, the particularly strategic supply chains for Italy's import-export are: pharmaceutical and agri-food. The growing demand for fresh products globally has activated new air routes to emerging markets and has imposed the need for precise, efficient and punctual air transport for perishable products. This has led to huge investments in advanced solutions, for example for temperature control in cold chain logistics. As regards the pharmaceutical sector, Italy - with its exports to the United States - is one of the hubs that is included in the top 10 global pharmaceutical flows from country to country in the second quarter of 2023.
