New European regulation on waste and packaging: here's how it will impact the logistics sector.
The European Union has discussed and accepted a new regulatory proposal focused on waste prevention and reduction.
The provision has a precise objective: to ensure that starting from 1 January 2030 all packaging on the market is designed to be recyclable. This recyclability will have to be ensured on a large scale from 2035.
But the journey up to the end of the decade was also dotted with measures to prevent the production of waste upstream, eliminating useless packaging, promoting reuse and refilling (refilling).
The Regulation has three main objectives:
- Prevent and reduce waste, also through its reuse.
- Make packaging used in the EU cost-effectively recyclable by 2030.
- Dramatically reduce plastic consumption.
The impact that this whole series of measures will have in the logistics and transport sector will be to standardize the formats of packaging and their labeling.
In fact, each packaging must have a label indicating the material it is made of and in which category of waste it must be disposed of.
